Breaking links in the chain of paper waste

Spring break a time to reflect and act for student activists

Instead of lounging on a beach in Florida, Student Senate President Erica Pelletier and Vice President Robert Phillips spent their spring break on a mission! On Monday, with help from Student Senator Alysha Sutton, they cleared 13 bags of trash from the stream in front of the Kittredge Center. On Thursday, they went through each building on campus and took down every outdated flyer on the bulletin boards, cut them up, and made a paper chain the l e n g t h of the Frost Building (the chain is now on display in the Student Activities Student Lounge to educate the campus about how much paper we are wasting). On Friday, Erica and Robert surveyed the campus bulletin boards, cleaned the abandoned ones, and clearly marked their ownership.

Their conclusion? Too many departments and clubs rely heavily on flyers when there are better and more sustainable options. Paper conservation is one simple and important way we can reduce costs and be environmentally friendly. If the outdated flyers from ONE DAY of collection were enough to span the Frost Building, how much are we wasting every week, month, and year?

Join us in our effort to reduce paper chain-making-possibilities at HCC!
