"Redefining Deaf" film and filmmaker at HCC
Re-Defining Deaf, a film by activist and ASL advocate Ryan Commerson, will be shown Tuesday, March 31, at 6:00 p.m. in the Leslie Phillips Forum, Building C, at Holyoke Community College. The 40-minute film draws on the work of cultural studies theorist Stuart Hall in an effort to examine the nature of representation and ideology. The goal is for the Deaf community to understand "how we got here" and how control of the media can serve as a means of putting forth a different representation of what it means to be D/deaf. The film, which will be presented in ASL with English subtitles, will be followed by a question and answer session with Ryan Commerson.
Admission is free, and open to all HCC students, staff, and faculty, the Deaf community, interpreters, ASL/Deaf Studies/interpreter training educators and students, and those that work with the deaf and hard-of-hearing population.
This event is sponsored by the HCC Deaf Studies program.
