New AA degree option offers three focus areas
Sustainability Studies: Education in Sustainable Practices
Starting this fall, a new AA degree option, Sustainability Studies, will prepare HCC students for careers in sustainable living in fields such as health and safety, energy and climate change, environmental research and engineering, public policy and law, resource conservation, corporate social responsibility, urban planning, and political science.
Students may concentrate on one of three areas: the Sustainability Studies Natural Science Option focuses on biological science, chemistry, agriculture, aquatic ecology, and the environment; the Social Equity Option focuses on social justice, policy making, and the political and sociological dimension of sustainability; and the Communication Option takes sustainability as a theme to explore through art, media, music, writing, and literature.
Research, engagement in cross-disciplinary Learning Communities, and field experiences with faculty, peers, and members of the HCC community, are hallmarks of the program. "These elements provide a solid foundation for students to develop ecological citizenship," said HCC Professor Kathleen Maiolatesi. "Acquiring and applying knowledge and skills prepares students to think deeply, reflect critically, and act responsibly in their communities to promote sustainable living."
