Accomplishments (personal or professional):
In addition to finding much gratification in the study of mathematics,
I have enjoyed the study of music for most of my life. I started
piano at a very early age, and soon after began the study of woodwind
instruments. I started playing the bassoon in 1981 and have been
a student of this instrument ever since. I have a minor in bassoon
performance from Chico State. I also love electronic music and enjoy
working with vintage and modern synthesizers, computerized musical
instruments, and computerized recording of music. I find the interface
between music and technology fascinating.
Favorite thing about teaching:
I love that it is always new - every time I teach a course there
are new ways to look at the concepts, or to combine the concepts
and viewpoints in ways that lead to interesting and innovative problem-solving
strategies..
Memorable moment at HCC:
There are many, but a true highlight is my very first day at HCC,
years ago and well before I had any concept that I would be teaching
here. I was walking around campus and met Vivian Ostrowski. We sat
down together and had a wonderful time talking.
I also will never forget when Professor Aaron Levin and I dressed
up for Halloween 2006 as the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch from
the Wizard of Oz! Stop by my office to see the photographic evidence.
Teaching philosophy:
This is more than a teaching philosophy – it is a philosophy
of life. With appropriate credit to Chuckles the Clown:
