Degree and from where it was received:
M.A., and Ph.D. coursework
(including clinical internship) in
Clinical Psychology,
Adelphi University, Garden City, NY
Courses you teach:
Human Sexuality, Abnormal
Psychology, Introduction to Psychology, and other courses and themes
as parts of Learning Communities (Psychology of Women, Human Development,
Personality, "Madness")
Accomplishments (personal
or professional):
In 2003 I spent a summer
on a Fulbright-Hays trip to India and Nepal. That trip was extraordinary
and mind-expanding, and I'm still feeling the effects, four years
later. I've been working toward various kinds of certifications
in the field of human sexuality, which is something I feel is a personal
mission for me.
Favorite thing about teaching:
Whenever students tell
me that something in one of my courses changed their lives for the
better. And, laughing.
Memorable moment at HCC:
Being honored by one
of my former HCC students at her new college, Westfield State, at
their annual "Celebrating Women" ceremony.
Teaching philosophy:
One of my first mentors
was a Political Science professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology,
in New York City. She told me something that I've never forgotten,
and it continues to influence every aspect of my own teaching. She
said, "I can teach my students the most complex, sophisticated concepts
from Marx and Hegel, but the examples I use to illustrate those
ideas come from Vogue and Elle magazines." In other words, keep
it real, and keep it relevant.
