Library
Instruction Guidelines
Faculty members are invited
to schedule a session for Library Instruction classes. Print and
electronic resources will be presented as we discuss search strategies
based on critical thinking. A demonstration of selected databases
and a hands-on component will be included. Your specific requests
and ideas are always welcome in the design of any session.
Below are some guidelines
for the most effective use of this service:
1. Allow at least one
week's notice when scheduling a session. This provides time for
the librarian to prepare materials and communicate with you about
students' needs and your teaching goals.
2. Plan the session to
correspond with a specific assignment to which they have already
been introduced. The library experience is more focused and successful
when students know what is expected of them ahead of time.
3. If possible, send
a copy of the assignment to the librarian before the session. This
allows for improved planning and interaction in the library classroom.
It will also be kept on file at the Reference Desk for future interactions
with your students.
4. You may want to schedule
a follow-up session to address additional research concepts such
as efficient use of the World Wide Web. Search strategies for the
World Wide Web will not be covered in the primary session. Web
Evaluation for Faculty Class Assignments is one site
providing tips for using the World Wide Web for your course assignments.
5. More advanced exercises
are available to accommodate students who have previously attended
an Information Instruction session. Therefore, please encourage
all students to attend.
6. Plan to remain with
your class throughout the session; your presence builds an important
bridge between the classroom and the library!
7. You may choose to
bring students to the library yourself. Great! Just let us know
in advance so we can ensure that your visit does not overlap with
a previously scheduled class. Space in the reference area and access
at the terminals is limited.
Feel free to stop by
the Reference Desk (x2424) to schedule a session or to discuss any
questions you may have.
