About Basketball at HCC

Holyoke Community College has a very long history of sports competition. Basketball was the first sport instituted at HCC. Dating back to the late 1940's, then called HOLYOKE JR. COLLEGE barnstormed throughout New England with its basketball team playing numerous College and University JV programs. The College was founded in 1946 and became incorporated as a State Institution in 1964. The basketball program ranks as one of the longest standing programs in both New England and among two-year colleges nationally. Coaching basketball at HCC in the 1950's was Norm Hiersche. In 1967, Bill Scanlon took the helm until 1970, when he moved on to Union College in New York. Then the team was coach by Rick Golas for the next 21 years until 1990-91. In 1991-92, Don Moye coached before moving on to Pro and Division 1 teams. In 1992-93, Kevin McCaskill took the helm and coached for 13 years until 2004-05. Currently, Chris Montemayor is the coach. During this time period basketball was played primarily at the Holyoke Armory which closed in 1988. From 1989 - 2000, the team played at Dean Tech H.S. Today, home games are played at the Bartley Center for Athletics and Recreation, a first class campus facility. The facility features a three-court gymnasium, a fitness and wellness center, a multipurpose exercise area, lockers with steam and sauna, and a seminar/classroom. The maple floor in the gymnasium is a fixed-floating floor that provides resiliency and comfort for the student-athletes.

Over 500 students have competed on HCC basketball teams over the years. This includes All region players and Academic All-Americans. In 1968-69 the Massachusetts Community College Athletic Conference (MCCAC) was formed and HCC joined sister colleges in Massachusetts to participate in intercollegiate competition and post season play. Sports teams, including basketball, joined the National Jr. College Athletic Association (NJCAA) in 1971-72, competing in both state, regional, and national tournaments
