Foley and Florek Earn Big Wins in Region XXI Play
HOLYOKE, MA - Sophomore lefty Bobby Foley (Springfield) struck out seven and allowed only two hits over seven scoreless innings in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Tigers of Roxbury Community College.
Held hitless until the 4th inning, the Cougars' David White (S. Deerfield) singled advancing the runner on 1st to 3rd with 1 out. The following batter, Nickolas L'Heureux (W. Springfield), bunted home the game's only run. Foley (3-0) struck out the side in the 5th and then in the 7th with 2 out and a runner on second, got a Roxbury pinch hitter to ground out to second with a full count to end the game.
After winning the first game 1-0, Game 2 featured more offense as HCC sophomore Sam Farnsworth (Westfield) hit the team's first home run off the season. Farnsworth's 2-run shot over the left field wall put the Cougars up 3-0 in the first inning.
HCC recieved another strong pitching performance in Game 2 from freshman righty Zak Florek (Westfield) who went seven innnings allowing two runs on two solo homers. Florek (1-1) struck out eight Tigers on the afternoon.
Scoring two more runs in the 4th and one in the 6th, the Cougars earned a 6-2 victory in Game 2, improving to 6-11 overall, 4-0 against Region XXI Division III. HCC travels to Southern New Hampshire University today to take on the JV Penmen at 4 p.m.
