Baseball: Five Cougars Named to All-New England Teams

Karl Kapinos - 1st Team All-New England

Sophomore 1st baseman Karl Kapinos played 40 games for the Cougars this season. Kapinos led the team in on-base percentage (.469), runs (37), steals (17), walks (26), hit-by-pitch (13) and tied for the team lead with 2 home runs and 10 doubles. After an impressive freshman season in 2011, Karl saw very few pitches to hit this year. Despite being pitched around quite often, Karl batted .306 with 37 hits and 19 RBI. Spending the majority of his time at 1st base, Karl finished 2012 with a .973 fielding percentage with 272 put outs. This is Karl's first All-New England 1st team selection, recieving 2nd team honors last season.

 

Bobby Foley - 1st Team All-New England

Sophomore lefty Bobby Foley pitched 45.2 innings for the Cougars in an injury-shortened 2012 season.  When healthy, Foley was Holyoke's ace finishing with a 2.76 ERA, striking out 37 batters and walking only 15.  Bobby  went 3-2 for the Cougars allowing only 14 earned runs on 37 hits.  This is his first All-New England selection.   

 

Mike Foley - 2nd Team All-New England

Freshman 2nd baseman Mike Foley played in 40 games this season for HCC.  Foley led the team in batting (.348), at-bats (135) and hits (47).  Mike hit the only two triples that the Cougars had this year and was a threat on the bases, stealing 15 bags and getting caught only once (93.75%).  He hit nine doubles to go along with 21 RBI and one HR.  Reaching base better than 40% of the time (.407), Foley scored 34 runs for HCC in 2012.  As the Cougars' everyday 2nd baseman, he finished with a .916 fielding percentage with 67 put outs and 75 assists.  This is Mike's first All-New England selection. 

 

Tommy Cowell - 2nd Team All-New England

Sophomore 3rd baseman Tommy Cowell played in 35 games this season and tied for the team lead in doubles (10) and HRs (2).  Tommy batted .315 with 35 hits and 19 RBI.  He reached base at a .417 percentage and took advantage of his opportunities stealing eleven bases in eleven attempts.  Cowell had a .864 fielding percentage with 33 put outs and 37 assists.  This is his first All-New England selection for baseball, recieving the award in soccer in 2010.

 

Sam Farnsworth - All-New England Honorable Mention

Sophomore utility man Sam Farnsworth played in 36 games for HCC this season, alternating between 3rd base and catcher.  Sam also spent some time in the outfield as well as pitching when called upon.  Sam racked up 41 hits and seven doubles, good for a .315 average.  He hit one HR and drove in 15, scoring 27 runs along the way.  Farnsworth only committed six errors on the season while playing multiple positions.  He finished with a .947 fielding percentage with 87 put outs and 20 assists.  This is Sam's first All-New England selection.
