HOLYOKE -- The 17th annual HCC Jazz Festival opens Friday, March 28, with a concert by the Amherst Jazz Orchestra featuring the Jeff Holmes Quartet as guest artist for a weekend of musical performances.
The festival begins at 8 p.m. in the Leslie Phillips Theater in the HCC Fine & Performing Arts building. Tickets are $15 (general public), $10 (senior and non-HCC students) and free for members of the HCC community (students, staff and faculty). Call (413) 552-2485 to reserve tickets.
Jeff Holmes is a noted pianist, composer and trumpet player who is a professor of music and director of Jazz and African-American Music Studies at the University of the Massachusetts. Filling out the Jeff Holmes Quartet are Adam Kolker on tenor, soprano, and bass clarinet, James Cammack on acoustic and electric bass, and Steve Johns on drums. The group's debut album, "Of One's Own," was released in 2012.
The festival continues on Saturday, Mach 29, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the Leslie Phillips Theater with big band and combo performances by high school and HCC jazz students. Jazz clinics, workshops and jam sessions will be held throughout the day in the HCC Recital Hall (FPA building, Room 137)
The festival will conclude Saturday with a concert in the theater from 4 to 5 p.m.
All Saturday events are free and open to the public. Individuals who wish to participate in workshops will be charged a nominal registration fee.
