Poets Diane Gilliam Fisher and Ida Stewart read from their work. Fisher's prize-winning book, Kettle Bottom, uses verse to tell the story of the West Virginia Mine Wars of 1920-21. Through the voices of immigrants, miners and their families, and the children of freed slaves, Fisher describes what happened when the United Mine Workers union defied the coal operators and their hired thugs. Stewart will read excerpts from Gloss, an acclaimed collection of poems about her childhood in West Virginia.
