Waiving Course Placement
You can send official or unofficial copies of the documents below to admissions@hcc.edu to see if you can waive the assessment.

Students may be exempt from course placement based on the multiple measures listed below. Please see each section for detailed information about each type of document HCC will accept as proof of placement to waive course assessment through multiple measures.
Dual Enrollment students may only waive course placement with SAT or ACT scores - use of the high school transcript requires a final (after graduation) gpa.
English
- A score of ACT English 18+ will be eligible for English Composition (ENG 101)
Math
- A Score of ACT 22+ will be eligible for College Algebra (MTH 104)

English
- Students with English Language and/or Literature Composition AP scores of 3+ will be eligible for English Composition (ENG 101)
Send score reports or transcripts to admissions@hcc.edu. See the Credit for Prior Learning page for information on credits awarded for AP exams.
Students who have previously completed English and/or Math coursework (minimum of 3 credits) with a final grade of C- or higher at a regionally accredited college or university may not need to complete the assessment. Check to see if your credits will transfer to HCC.
Students who hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States may be exempt from English placement testing.
Unofficial and Official transcripts can be sent to admissions@hcc.edu to be evaluated for waiving course placement. Official college transcripts will be sent to Student Records for evaluation of transfer credits once accepted.
English
- A final high school GPA of 2.7 or higher, students will be eligible for English Composition (ENG 101)
Math
- A final high school GPA of 2.7 or higher, students can be placed into Development Math (MTH 014), Statistics (MTH 142), or Number Systems (MTH 125)
- A final high school GPA of 2.7 or higher and a B- or greater in Algebra 2, students will be eligible for College Algebra (MTH 104)
- Students interested in a higher level of Math have the option of taking course placement. Please fill out this form to receive more information about Course Placement
Required Documentation
- GPA must be from a U.S. high school
- Submit a copy of your high school transcript that shows the final (after graduation) cumulative GPA and date of graduation
- Send transcripts to admissions@hcc.edu
English
- GED test version must be the 2015 or later
- A GED English score of 165+ is eligible for English Composition (ENG 101)
- A combination of HiSet Writing of 15+ and HiSet Essay score of 4+ will be eligible for English Composition (ENG 101)
Math
- GED test version must be the 2015 or later
- A GED Math score of 165+ is eligible for College Algebra (MTH 104)
- A HiSet Math score of 15+ will be eligible for College Algebra (MTH 104)
Send the High School Equivalency Transcript to admissions@hcc.edu. These can be ordered through Diploma Sender.
English
- Reading & Writing SAT score of 480+ is eligible for English Composition (ENG 101)
Math
- A SAT Score of 530+ is eligible for College Algebra (MTH 104).

Students who have prior course experience can send official and unofficial college transcripts to admissions@hcc.edu for review of waiving course placement. If you have an international college transcript, course-by-course evaluation can be translated and evaluated using https://www.naces.org/.
