About the Lowell Observatory:

Lowell Observatory is a modern research institution with a long and storied history. Discoveries at Lowell include the first proof of the expanding universe, the discovery of Pluto, the lunar landing maps used by the Apollo missions, and the rings of Uranus. Current researchers at Lowell are using the James Webb Space Telescope, the Hubble Telescope and other facilities around the world, as well as their own 4.3 M telescope. Founded in 1894 by Percival Lowell and located in Flagstaff, AZ, it is the oldest private astronomical research institution in the United States. Lowell Putnam, a Springfield native, will give a talk that highlights both the current research and the history of this American institution and will provide videos and images of current research.
